The complete World Heritage Route in the Harz has a length of 73 km from Goslar to Walkenried plus a 12 km detour from Clausthal-Zellerfeld to Bad Grund. The ideal starting and finishing points of the route are the World Heritage Information Centres in Goslar and in Walkenried, which are the most northerly and southerly locations on the route. The museums and other places of interest are spread along the route like pearls on a necklace. In addition to the Information Centres, these cultural highlights include, for example, the Rammelsberg Mine and the Imperial Palace in Goslar, the Upper Harz Mining Museum in Clausthal-Zellerfeld and the CistercianMuseum Walkenried Monastery. Among other places, the detour in the route takes you to the Knesebeck Shaft in the mining town of Bad Grund and the 19-Lachter-Stollen in Wildemann. At every place of interest you will find the information boards of the World Heritage Route in the Harz, so that you can inform yourself about the museums and historic monuments before visiting the authentic locations.

Other destinations along the route include the visitor car parks on the B241, B242 and L519, from which you can walk to the freely accessible historic monuments and landscape features of the Upper Harz Water Management System. The Grund Gradient and the Oderteich pond are just two examples of the unique cultural landscape of the Harz, which has been shaped by mining. At these "access points" of the Upper Harz Water Management System you will also find information boards that present the UNESCO World Heritage in the Harz and the respective World Heritage places of interest.
