World Heritage Journeys in the European Union –
from the Harz to the USA and China
Since 13th September 2018, the World Heritage Site "Mines of Rammelsberg, Historic Town of Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management System" has been part of an international multimedia campaign together with other well-known European UNESCO World Heritage Sites. "World Heritage Journeys in the European Union" is the name of the project that UNESCO has implemented together with the media partner National Geographic Travel and the respective World Heritage Sites. The campaign, which is supported by the European Commission, is aimed at guests from the USA and China.
Of the 350 World Heritage Sites in the European Union, 34 were selected for the campaign. Five of these are in Germany: the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley as well as the World Heritage Site Mines of Rammelsberg, Historic Town of Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management System.
Because of its underground components, the World Heritage in the Harz is part of the category "Underground" along with other underground locations such as the wine cellars in the Champagne region and former mines in Sweden, Poland, Hungary, France and Belgium. In addition to the theme "Underground", the journey through the European World Heritage also covers the themes "Ancient", "Romantic" and "Royal".
